Our story

For over 20 years, we’ve walked alongside individuals, whānau, communities, and systems navigating the impacts of suicide.

We were known as Clinical Advisory Services Aotearoa (CASA). Today, we are Te Aho — the weave that connects people and knowledge, grounded in whakapapa and guided by purpose.

We bring together the strength of:

Lived Experience
Mātauranga Māori
Clinical Experience

to guide the journey towards an Aotearoa without suicide.

Towards Wellbeing

Building confident, capable workforce who can respond to suicide risk with care

Oranga Tonutanga is a national service that supports frontline professionals to recognise the signs of suicide risk and respond in a timely, compassionate, and effective way.

We provide consultation and oranga-focused guidance that helps kaimahi build their confidence, sharpen their practice, and respond with clarity and manaaki when working with people who might be at risk of suicide.

Whether you work in health, social services, education, or community roles, Oranga Tonutanga can equip your team with the tools, language, and support to navigate challenging situations and promote long-term wellbeing.

Towards Wellbeing is a specific service of Oranga Tonutanga that supports Oranga Tamariki social workers across Aotearoa in their vital work with tamariki and rangatahi.

Our focus is on helping social workers build their knowledge, confidence, and skills to support young people at risk.

We offer guidance and tools for:

  • Identifying and responding to suicide risk

  • Creating safety plans

  • Strengthening protective factors and wellbeing

  • Promoting mauri ora, the flourishing of life

This initiative equips social workers to act early, competently, and safely, while placing the wellbeing and future of rangatahi at the centre of every response.

National SSID Information Service

Timely information to support safe local responses

Ngā Kohi Rau provides authorised local responders with timely, provisional information about suspected suicides - enabling swift, coordinated, and informed postvention.

Information is shared under strict protocols, and only with those who have a clear postvention role within their rohe.

By supporting local leadership with the right information at the right time, Ngā Kohi Rau helps communities respond early and reduce the risk of further harm.

Community Postvention Support

Working together to support communities after suicide

Tō te Rā offers guidance and support to hapori and organisations where there are concerns about suicide clusters or contagion.

When invited, we walk alongside local leaders, services, and whānau to plan a safe, culturally informed postvention response.

This may include:

  • Supporting community with postvention hui and to develop local plans

  • Offering guidance to local iwi, health and social services to activate supports after suicide

  • Elevating whānau and community-led approaches

  • Supporting communication strategies

  • Offer insights from a national perspective on locally led solutions

Our role is to bring people together to reduce harm, support healing, and uphold the strength of hapori as they navigate this challenging time.
