What is suicide postvention?

After a suicide many people suffer greatly and are grieving; the impact can be shattering and fragmenting, reverberating through a community. This impact may even include further suicide attempts or suicides (referred to as suicide exposure effect and suicide cluster).

Postvention refers to the wide range of activities that are undertaken directly after a suspected suicide to prevent further harmful outcomes to individuals by addressing suicide exposure effects and restoring hope, balance and wellbeing to the people and their community.

Who is Tō te Rā and what do they do?

Tō te Rā provides support to those experiencing a suicide cluster or suicide exposure effects.
• In the context of suicide exposure effects or clustered suicides or suicide attempts, community led evidence-based responses and interagency cooperation, and coordination is essential.
• The immediate aim of cluster postvention is to reduce community distress and anxiety, suicide attempts and further suicides by coordinating community efforts to ensure that impacted individuals are identified and connected with culturally appropriate and effective community support and services.

Tō te Rā offer an Advisor (CA) with clinical experience and knowledge in postvention who can offer guidance to communities. The CA collaborates with local leadership to activate and amplify effective local solutions, combining Tō te Rā knowledge and experience in the management of suicide exposure effects and suicide clusters with the community’s own expertise & knowledge to co-design and deliver the most appropriate postvention actions for their community. The Tō te Rā Advisor (CA) does not lead community postvention but rather holds a support role to assist the local response.
